A very beautiful wedding

Posted by Diana Needham on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

On August 23 my son, Michael, was married in Columbus, Ohio to a very lovely lady from India. It was one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever attended.

The ceremony was in her tradition, at the one and only Hindu temple in Columbus, with her parents coming from India. The ceremony was performed by 2 priests in Sanskrit, an ancient language that not even devote Hindus understand. Many guests were seated on the floor, while others used the chairs set up.

As you might imagine, my son was a bit stressed, not knowing exactly what to expect. I should add that in the Hindu religion, rehearsals are not done, since the completion of the ceremony means the couple is now married.

I must say that, although it was difficult to understand the language and even the brief descriptions provided by the priest in English for the guests, it was one of the most beautiful and sacred weddings I have ever attended. The symbolism, sequence of the program, atmosphere, colors, and wonderful family and friends made this a very wonderfully meaningful event.

As an aside, the Columbus Dispatch called the bride a month in advance and asked if they could send a reporter. They were doing a story on non-traditional weddings and had heard about their wedding. The Dispatch sent not only a reporter but a photographer, and the great story ran in the wedding section on Friday, September 5. Click here to read the story.

I must say that I loved being the mother of the groom!
